How to play Space Siege 2

Assassinate CT and become his doppleganger.

Weapons

I've picked up 2 weapons (fusion beam rifle and the mark 2 repeater rifle) yet they don't show up in my inventory for me to use. Am I missing something? They are not cybernetic weapons|||Those are weapons for HR-V :) You'll be able to equip them at a workbench by accessing the HR-V tab.

best config for a pure human

Just wondering how to attribute skill points for the absolute toughest 100%human...

any help is appreciated.

RM|||Well if you're going 100% human, (Or 93% with the eye) You're best bet if you're going down combat is to get the first 2 talents 5/5 for Health and Damage, you want to get the Shard Fist upgrade including the 1/1 at the end of it, and of course, the most important talent for a full human. Discipline.

You have to be skilled with it though because it's not passive, you have to use it at the beginning of a fight, it should last you a good portion of it, and when you lose it, switch to shield, or switch back and forth. It's a good tactic for human endurance. You sacrifice the damage of the cybernetics to get the power of fortitude for the human spirit. :D

Happy hunting.

Cybernetics

Aside from slightly different ending, and the 2 Skills you don't have access to.

Do Cybernetics have any other penalty?|||you looking ugly.|||So that would be a no then.

I actually don't mind the Cybernetic look. Except the Spine, not a fan of reptiles.|||There's really no penalty except on the role-playing aspect of it, basically the storyline part you mention.

It's actually the other way around, there's a lot of penalties for being human, lots of missed out talents / etc.|||Vintageone

Dodging with Q and E

Since the Space Siege (Dungeon Siege) engine doesnt support WASD movement, there might be another way to make dodging easier:

Instead of dodging in the direction you are shooting, you move 90° to the left or to the right by hitting the Q or E button.

Maybe it would be a good idea to make a shorter dodge animation too. Only one or two small steps instead of a fancy roll. That way you can stay on target and avoid taking all the hits. And a lot of FPSs use the same keys for looking around corners, so they are already 'hardwired' into the gamer brain.

Its not a perfect solution but it should be possible to implement it without rewriting half the game engine. It wont mess to much with the game balance either. If you had full WASD control you could dance around those bugs without taking any serious damage.

What do you think?|||Col. Jessep|||Kal_Jerico|||Some time ago i posted a similar proposal to improve the controls as they currently exist, because i also have doubts that a) WASD easily can be implemented additionally and b) that it will be a good implementation since many WASD controlled games suffer a non-ergonomic and botchy concept there your left hand is totally overstrained with maneuvering your char and activating features simultaneously.

Just press key '1' while turning left...

Keys to switch the all the guns, dropping/placing grenades/mines by keys, healing, collecting loot, a couple of key-commands to give offensive/defensive/formation/waiting/etc. orders to H-RV - even you can play piano on the keyboard or your hero will be WASD-less half of the time...

A well implemented WASD/key concept could intercept such matters maybe, but not one poorly attached afterwards.

Thus for this game i really hope GPG is willed at least to revise dodging anyhow…|||Kal_Jerico|||I'm surprised they didn't bother with WASD controls, have they said why or is it just being slack?

You could even mod WC3 to use WASD for movement, surely it is easier when you can do it in the base code.|||Chris Taylor said in an interview (on a German site IIRC) that the Dungeon Siege engine doesnt support WASD controls. I guess it would have been to expensive. :?

(Space Siege is based on the DS engine.)|||I'm actually pleased with the dodge system, my only problem with it is it's super-sensitive responsiveness.

If you hit e twice (like you spam skills in an rpg) you'll actually dodge twice, whether you want to or not.

Other than that, I actually like the dodge system, you get to aim where you want to dodge and quickly move your mouse back, keeps your mind into the game.|||I want a and e instead since I use an azerty board.

Infact in the options I set it to azerty and when I hit Z to collect parts... my camera zoomed in. When I hit W it collected the parts. Why bother setting it to azerty input in the options if it still acts like a qwerty -_-

How to play Space Siege

The best way I have found of playing Space Siege is to watch 2001, then Alien, then take a fistful of hallucinogenic drugs. I got to the second level easily but was then eaten by a time monster, which resulted in everything going backwards. Has anyone found a way to defeat this challenging opponent?

The one criticism though that I have of the game so far is that I thought the atmosphere was spoiled somewhat by having a monster that looks like my mum come in and tell me I'd ruined her life.|||Third worst troll post ever.|||I wonder why this has not been deleted yet.

WASD key movement

First off - kudos to GPG, great game! I do love your innovation.

So after jumping in the demo the first thing I did was hit WASD to try to move around. Naturally the game is true to the whole diablo/dungeon siege style 'click-to-move' model, but with a much more interactive gameplay it just felt like I should be moving around with the keyboard.

A while back I played a similar sci-fi top-down game, I forget what it was called though and it's annoying me, that was a lot like Space Siege and that used to the keyboard to move the character around.

I would very much like to be able to do the same thing in SS, so I guess I'm just talking aloud in a vain hope that someone important will read my post and go "hmm, ok, lets listen to this nova fella and quickly put this in the release version" or maybe even say "well actually you just do this and then this and you can do that!", but I don't like my chances.|||I had the exact same thought when I played the demo. Using the WASD keys for moving would also allow you to move WHILE fireing and to avoid enemy fire easier.

Using the WASD keys just feels natural and an option to use them for movement would be good.|||You don't get to use WASD? *cancels demo download*

I could never work games without WASD.|||Omecron|||BulletMagnet|||I agree with al of the above, WASD was the first thing I tried too.

Maybe if they made a "sticky" targeting thing where once you attack a target you'll attack that target until it's dead, letting you move around without have to continuously click on the enemies.

But WASD would still be better.

Mike|||OrangeKnight|||You can hold out the left mouse and he'll move twoards it.

I prefer that in isometric RPGs than WASD.

And yeah the WASD camers is a bit new gotta get used to it. :)|||The Problem TCC, is that we Can't simultaneously Rightclick to shoot at aliens and Left click somewhere else to move.

It's like Starcraft: The Dungeon Siege Edition!

Mike|||I raised this point in brent_w's "Needs a console release" thread.

http://forums.gaspowered.com/viewtopic.php?t=30202

I see once again game developers are being foolish. Such a tragic destiny. Can humans ever defy fate?|||NovaPrim3|||So.. who was the one thinking that a 8 year old control sheme is fit for the year 2008?

We had tht in diablo and diablo 2 and we had it in dozens of clones and it was an annoyance in each of them.

Read this carefully: The moment you make a game about a guy using a gun to shoot things, make it a wasd shooter'esque controlsheme because i simply can't stand being a fckn turret.|||Quote:|||Darh_Carl99|||Use shield, dodging problem solved.|||Making a control system deliberately awkward just to force players to gain skills to overcome it, is not good design. Otherwise we'd all be applauding Starcraft's 12 unit selection limit.

Even fighting games have much simplified their control schemes since the early days.

Tactics should be about what you CHOOSE to do, not what the control systems lets you fumble your way through.|||AdmiralZeech|||I just used shield and stopped caring about wasd -_- I'd need zqsd for my azerty board anyway|||Ah I see TCC is telling us how "fine" the game is and how he'd prefer it not to change again. Good ol TCC, haven't changed a bit since his days with us in FA. :)

Camera fix?

Hello, I am not new to this game but I recently replaced my hard drive with a new, better one. So I had to re-install all the programs I had before. I have never had this problem before but now it occurred.

When I play any kind of match, including tutorial, I get the problem that when I zoom in, some kind of locking the mouse occurs.

The mouse becomes invisible and when I move the mouse, without clicking, the camera view is changed. When I move the mouse to the right, the camera rotates clockwise and if I click, without holding down the button, there appears a square, the one that comes if you hold the mouse button and drag. Does anyone recognize this? If you do, please answer this topic or PM me.

This error only occurs if I have zoomed in enough to make the strategic, colored icons for the different units. If I zoom out, everything goes back to normal.|||Are you talking about Supreme Commander? Because if so I think this is in the wrong forum (i.e. the Space Siege forums), which means virtually no one will see it.|||oh, sorry. Yes, I meant for supreme commander, I thought this was the right section, sorry.|||No worries, I just wanted to make sure you knew to repost it. Otherwise I doubt anyone else would have seen it to help you (and sorry that I can't help you, hopefully someone in the right forum will know a fix).

**warning spoiler** stuck...

Has anyone killed Vargas? I can't get past him... Any tips? Suggestions? Poor Seth and HR-V have already been slaughtered twice by him and his evil henchmen... **sniff**|||Yeah, hate to say it - he was incredibly easy.

I did it as a cyborg'd engineer. Just set HR-V on him, and then ran around dropping the different bots and throwing grenades when I could.

As a side note: the game is fun; but damn was it way way way too short. Diablo spoiled me I guess.|||I guess being a cyborg's the key ;-) I managed at 80% human (eye implant and the arm), but it was too close for comfort-- HR-V kicked the bucket early, and I was down to virtually no health, running around in circles like a dork while I set bomb droids on him and trying to get off enough shots to recharge the bomb droid ability :-\

Oh well, I survived, and it's now on to Exterior Maintenance... ;-)|||It's a fun fight, but it's tough on your HR-V. My best suggestion is if you don't want to fuss with F2, I like to equip him with the napalm weapon (I don't think you get it by Vargas time though) and send him into the boss because I know he's going to die anyways, (Expendable units for the win) and let him rip enemies a new one with his massive aoe.|||Don't you have the shield ability by the time you get to vargas?|||yeah you do

Controls

i think they should move the controls to move teh player back to the keyboard it more fun waht do you all say?|||Ya

player in internet???

hi! :) i have space siege but i have no server to join :(
and i don't see why in the server internet i have no server

PLZ HELP ME! :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:|||eh...hello? 1 helper is here?|||I don't think there are many players left for this game so servers are few, if there are any at all.|||Space seige uses gpgnet as its internet server so if you have not got that installed you will not be able to go online to play other players.
and as x-cuded said there are very few that go online on it :(

Best weapons vs. enemies

At first I thought the weapons were like a ladder, one better than another, but at least in multiplayer, each weapon does well vs. certain aliens/bots.

Has anyone noted which weapon is best in which situation?

The blade seems to be the all around weapon, and totally takes apart the Rhinos...

RM|||Well the blade is made to be the all around because it's not only melee but it's your first weapon so you don't get to ladder with it unless you upgrade it + go cybernetics.

My favorite weapon is the Gauss cannon due to it's high critical strike rate and it's impressive visuals + it's area effect, it shoots a line but doesn't stop at the first enemy. :D|||ReadyMan|||thanks for sharing!|||try not to wake an old theard up lol.
You can use anyweapon for anyone all you ahve to do is hit them in the right places |||You responded to a bot reddev!|||i know fun :D

Gameplay Forum

Here we shall discuss the gameplay and general mechanics of Space Siege!

After release, all guides, tips, strategies and similar information shall be posted here!

Remember, the community can be the best resource for game information!|||When is it being released?|||September or something.

This forum scared the heck out of me!

I thought TCC deleted General Discussion o.0|||General Discussion is mostly used by people who are too lazy to find the right sub-forum for their topic :P. I guess it has a few uses though.

Is the protagonist too bland?

Does anyone else think the protagonist is way too fresh and bland looking? He could really use an art makeover in my opinion.|||Looking at him again, I totally agree. His face leaves a lot to be desired. He looks like one of my KotOR characters, but without the facial hair or the awesomeness. The guy on the front page of the SS website does look a little odd. I hope he looks better ingame.|||Yeah, I agree. He is rather boring looking, and the cybernetic head replacement looks bad too.|||More contemplation: he looks like a sidekick, not the main character. The robot looks more like a badass savior of humanity. The protagonist here looks like Barney from Halflife.|||AZ: Barney FARKING owns.

Barney > Gordon Freeman :)|||More tattoos! PIERCINGS! XTREME!|||Needs better Cybernetic parts, his all suffer from an ugly Virus.

Mike|||Chris Taylor said in an interview that there will be no female character to save money (which is totally fine with me). But PLEASE let us customize the main character for ourselves a bit! Something like the character generation in Oblivion or Mass Effect would be nice. I dont like to play a RPG when I cant adjust the main characters looks to my liking.

Also what AZ said, he looks bland like a NPC who gets killed in a side quest. Right now I would prefer every character form the SupCom campaign.|||The only ugly cybernetic part that I noticed was the head. The rest were okay.|||Gnats3|||I'm talking about the "brain enhancement" upgrade shown on Spacesiege.com. It was also shown in the newest video at about 0:26 when the camera circles Seth as he adds the upgrades.

The first time through the game I would probably not install it because when I do single-player in games like this, I usually go through once doing whatever I feel like, then if I like the game enough, I'll go through again doing the extremes (all cybernetics or no cybernetics). I do the extremes later because usually it results in differences in the storyline, and is usually more efficient than doing a mix. In multiplayer I would probably use it, assuming the bonuses are worth it.

I mostly dislike it because it doesn't really seem to go with the other upgrades. It would probably look better if it fit in with the other upgrades, which seem to be more silver shiny metal instead of this darker metal. It also seems to make the face look smaller and bonier while the other upgrades bulk up the character.

Oh, and welcome to the forums :P

Space Siege

is starting to look slightly epic.|||i was listening to "when the lights are down" by kamelot as i started watching this, it finished buffering about 1/3rd f the way through the song and somehow the video synced absolutely perfectly.

'twas truly an epic thing.

oh btw, we saw all that cool spceship CGI crap. is that actually any part of the game, or is it all just spacemarine RPG in techno diablo-land?

because the actual gameplay looked poretty meh, but that space stuff looked absolutely awsome.|||stupid advertisements keep crashing my computer >.<

I've also noticed HR-V's walking sounds are from of TA's GCI cutscenes TheArmCommander, they can be heard in the one of the older videos, the presentation one, but that was Alpha.

Going Gold soon?

Now that the demo is out, can we expect a "Gone Gold" announcement soon? My favourite gamestore Gamemania claims Space Siege will be released on 22 August and since most demo's come out when there is only a month on the release-wait-o-meter remaining, does this mean Space Siege will be among us soon?

Animation quality?

Is animation in Space Siege going to be on par with Resident Evil 4(PC)?

I hope you learned your lesson and substandard animation won't ruin Space Siege like it did Supreme Commander..|||Derek|||Supcom wasn't ruined by the animation. Space Siege will probably be better since you don't have hundreds of units running around at once.|||Yes, I thought the same about Hellgate: London and look how that turned out. The quality of animation is the greatest issues in all games.|||Sorry, but no.|||I just remembered that Spore Creature Demo has the best animations, it should be a role model for every game, especially turning around animation. I didn't notice any flaw in Spore Creatures animations. And consider that creatures are not fixed to limited number, that's some achievement.|||Well, they kind of had to be awesome in Spore, since they had to get it to work on any creature that was made. I'm sure a lot more time was put into the animations since the animations are practically half the game...|||Derek|||Check this out!-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lh6r43p8gQ|||It's standing there bobbing up and down...|||Every creature in spore has the same animations.

And I don't think SupCom's robots are supposed to bob up and down.

Space Siege's animations are quite now, only the alpha trailer had jerkiness.|||I just hope the robot helper will be animated with detail and fluidity. I would buy Space Siege just for that. Remember HK47 from KOTOR? Best character ever.

Anyway it would be nice to have the quality of animation like this-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSmmKTXmQMM

and Resident Evil 4 as a role model for animating the main character.

Am I too demanding?

P.S.

That link I gave earlier for spore creature was for comedic effect...|||I just finished playing the demo and the impression I got is appalling.

The animation of the main character is very poor, there are practically no transitional animations between various movements and motions.

The controls and perspective are awkward, like Hellgate: London never happened. You have unlimited ammo. No inventory. Same gun effects for different guns.

It's just bad.|||You're even whinier than I am. I don't think you'll be satisfied with any of the games that Gas Powered Games puts out. Why are you even here?|||Derek|||DeadMG|||I found the demo to be highly confusing, didn't explain things very much.

eg. When I picked up my new arm it said I should install it right away but gave no direction as how to do that. So for a few min I was sitting there looking for a way to do it then gave up when there seemed to be no way.

There needs to be more direction to the player in that respect. Since it is a demo, its possible in the game it has already gone through all the introduction things. The game definitely got me intrigued.|||I think Derek is trollin' >.>

You want animations, go watch TV, geeze.

"HALP" seems a bit redundant, but still.|||hehe I had a similar problem just another game, put the file in a folder where there isn't a setup.exe of some other application already.|||Yeah, I had the FRAPS setup.exe in the same folder and had to move it.|||Is the demo any good? Good enough to merit the 9 hundred and whatever MB download?|||It doesn't take that long to download. Go for it.|||I hear it has an unusual control setup. Unusual, that is, when compared to almost every FPS/RPG nowadays. It's not a question of how long it takes downloads, I usually get at least 800KB/s (when the internet is working at all,) more of a question of whether I can fit it into my already clogged hard-disk.|||Cheers for the help TBO and Gnat3. Just renaming the problem-file did the trick.

The controls are... alright. Maybe it was my computer (or more specifically, my graphics card), but the whole thing seemed a tad... clunky. The animations stuttered a fair bit (with no evidential slowdown of the game), and it sometimes felt unresponsive.

None the less, it was interesting to play.|||The only problem I had with the demo was that it was too short. I had a blast playing it and can't wait for the release of the full game :)

Having said that there were a couple of areas that might have improved game play.

1. Having a mini - map. Whilst not a game breaker, having to pause, bring up the full game map, and then restart was a little bit jarring.

2. Having the camera controls move with the player. My wife pointed out this issue to me when she finished the demo. She said at times she would enter a room and be attacked from the side. In order to respond she would have to move the camera to face the attacks, and then open fire on them. Again this isn't game breaking just a minor annoyance.|||Having been a fan of the Dungeon Siege series I was looking forward to Space Siege, and the game has so far met and exceeded my expectations in certain ways. However I feel a few minor things should be addressed.

Pros:

Earth Blows Up - Not a anarchist or anything, just not a lot of Science Fiction where your truly alone. No longer having a Homeworld makes a story interesting, desperation can make many do interesting things...

CGI - The CGI movies that are included in the demo are pretty amazing.

Ethical Dilemma - Now this one is more of a shot in the dark until we can play the full game, but I like how Cybernetics or no-Cybernetics will influence gameplay and story. And how this regulates the difficulty of the gameplay. Easier if full cyborg, Harder if Human, Somewhere in between if Somewhere in between.

Scalability - Even on an old comp I can play the game decent in 800 x 600 windowed mode with bells and whistles. But obviously can't wait to play it on my new comp in a couple months.

Co-Op Multiplayer - I know another shot in the dark seeing as the full game is not released yet but being a console fan first I really do enjoy co-op campaigns. And it is good that PC users are getting the same treatment.

Cons:

Ageia Physics - Not a fan of the physics emulator, but I can live with it.

Short Demo - I know its only a demo, but I do hope the demo does not represent the shortness of stages. That is unless their are tons of them.

Indifferent:

Controls - Their not horrible, but not the best. I love how you have to hold down the right mouse button to continue attacking ala Diablo Style, but I can see how people would want an auto attack option. Maybe a toggle in the options menu. I also really like the free attack option while holding down the Shift key. Though I wish their was a key for roll right/roll left or dodge right/dodge left. Because being stuck with just the E key for dodging can make a fight a lot more difficult to manage.

All in all I really did enjoy the demo and look forward to picking up the game and playing both the single player campaign and blasting aliens with friends in online co-op.

Needs a console release.

Based on what I've learned of the game thus far, Space Siege is definitely the type of game I would rather play on console than PC.|||brent_w|||At this point I'd actually rather play just about anything on a PC rather than on a console. For the most part, I would only use consoles for games where I would be playing with friends in the same room or for games like on the Wii which use motion sensors. A PC is just more convenient since I can do everything on it.|||- Similar to how an FPS generally works better with mouse/kb, 3rd person action games tend to work better on control pad.

The only limitation is that your game design should support lock on, and you're restricted in what kind of targetable abilities you can have since you are only able to aim in a direction, you cant easily click on a point.

However, you are able to have abilities that involve holding a button and then pressing other buttons, which isnt handled well by PCs.

Firing in one direction whilst moving in another is more easily done with a control pad + lockon, than it is with a mouse "click to move and target" system. You could avoid this on the PC by having arrow keys or WASD to move and mouse to aim (which takes it away from the Diablo paradigm.) But WASD only allows you to move in the 8 directions, which may have implications for level design or camera control.

- Action RPGs can be very long in duration. It may be more comfortable to play them on the couch rather than at a PC. Also a control pad may be more comfortable for long periods. (or maybe I'm just RSI'ed from being a programmer :P)

- 3rd person Action RPGs are a natural fit for co-op play on the same screen. This is not common on PCs, but is common and easy to do on consoles.

- Whereas the complexity of a keyboard is a benefit to games like RTS games, for an Action RPG its more of a hindrance. A control pad allows your controls to be clearer. (provided you havent crammed the game with too many functions.) It also enforces a bit of design discipline - thinking about how to squeeze the game onto a control pad can result in more streamlined and better controls.

-----------------

Thats my take on it. I imagine the co-op thing would probably be the biggest factor for the general audience.|||GPG-Servo|||Maybe because the graphics look PS2-ish? -.-|||consoles are a plague, pcs can do everything they can and more. Consoles are just more popular among devs cause its easier to code for due to the one set of hardware for each.

The PC is better graphically, storage wise (this was a problem in Mass Effect I heard), processor wise, potential wise.|||As I think I stated in my other posting about the laggy mouse making the demo very difficult to play, I would strongly urge a port to console. I think this game has controls that are simple enough to be adapted for play on a console and it would eliminate all issues related to system configurations. PC games are anything but drop in a disc and play these days (always were?) and there is nothing more frustrating than buying a $50+ game, putting it in, and having it play terribly - having to update drivers, read forums, call support, edit INI files, etc. to get the game running correctly (if it ever does).|||thats the other thing about pcs, they require brains to use|||The game already looks like it's ready for the consoles graphics-wise, and it's already simplified enough that a console gamer won't be overwhelmed, all they need to do is change the controls around to work with a controller and I think it could be ported to all 3.

Please, please don't start a console vs pc debate. They both are good for different things, neither one hurts the other, now let's agree to disagree and move on.|||Vid-szhite|||Vid-szhite|||brent_w

Control mapping.

I keep seeing people complain about there not being control mapping in the playable demonstration. Wonder if that's the problem with the controls mapping (now that I think of it).|||This happened to me, too. I had to use regular fullscreen to play it.

Couple Questions...

[:1]I played the demo and noticed a couple things...

I see that you can not remap your keys and it's already been brought up; however, I'm just curious if anyone knows for SURE if that's only because it's a demo. Will the final release allow you to remap? In my mind, that's a show stopper (for me anyways).

You can zoom in and out and rotate from the side, but you can't change your perspective from top to bottom to allow to see further ahead. Anyone know if this will stay as is or will they change it? Again, annoying to me...not sure I can deal with it.

I'm very interested in the game and like it...but the above two things hinder it IMO.

Oh, and WASD movement would be great too (again, already brought up).|||I'd like zqsd movement instead >.<|||Anyone know?

Demo thoughts

[:1]First of all.. I loved the demo and

will be picking this one up. :D

Second.. please let us remap control keys.

also.. the game runs great on my AthlonX2 6000

but the main character animation is choppy when

running or turning... It's like he is "flickering" on and

off and is VERY annoying.

Anyone know what the expected length of this game

Thanks,

PG|||pilgrimg|||Derek|||DeadMG|||DeadMG's right; I agree with Derek that the animations tend to suck in Gas Powered Games games (is "Gas Powered Games games" redundant?), but since he insists that the not-so-hot animations "ruin" the games, it does seem quite pointless for him to be here. If he doesn't enjoy the games, I can only assume that he is here to troll. I mean, I don't like the Starcraft series, but I don't hang around their boards telling them why I don't like it.|||Yeah, he has told us a million times, he can't look past animations and play games for the gameplay. He hasn't offered any constructive criticism either - just "it sucks" with some latin references thrown in.

If you are just going to keep acting this way, just leave :/|||Pretty much all of his 24 posts are complaints|||No control remapping?

Whoa. That's like, an early 80s technology shortcoming. It was bad in Supcom, but for a 3rd person shooter / hack & slay like this, control remapping is a MUST HAVE.

What were they thinking?!|||maybe its just not there because you know, its a demo *hopes*|||meh, wasnt great, wasnt bad, dont think ill be buying it, not my style of game. 3rd person shooters were bad enough this has taken it to another level.

I honestly thought it was going to be a fps|||Hostile much?

To be honest, the animations bugged me, but I'm still unsure whether it's the game or my system. The thing is, if it bugs me for a 20 minute demo, it's going to annoy me in a, hopefully, many-houred game.

Games are not meant to annoy you. It's all well and good saying it's about the gameplay, but if the representation of one's actions are not up to par, it's jarring and breaks immersion.|||meh, honisty can sometimes be a little harsh. I'm not a fan of 3rd person shooters, I can get by with it in games like Mass Effect where its trying to be a first person while still showing you the character but this is a much more distant 3rd person and not my style of game.

It wasnt bad but graphics, controls, and 3rd person are not my cup of tea|||Gnats3|||The Anonymous Mr P|||Derek|||Gnats3|||Disclaimer: I in no way align my own opinion with the opinion of Derek. There's a hell of a lot of difference between the 'backbone of a game' and 'rather important'.

For the record, I didn't actually mean you when I commented on hostility - there seems to be more than enough of it going around for everyone to 'enjoy'.|||yeah, when I reread my post I was wondering what was harsh about it |||Derek|||Animations are not "the" key element. They need to be decent to, as Mr P said, prevent immersion from being broken, but once they reach a certain point, any improvements just make it look prettier with very little effect on how good the game is.|||Actually, I once played a game that was still in development and had no animations at all, but other elements were sufficient to provide immersion in spite of the lack. Visual elements are not always necessary for immersion (text games can demonstrate this nicely). However, I will concede that they often are, and will always improve any game.|||The main thing that bothered me graphics-wise was the lack of anti-aliasing. I've seen instant turning in enough games already that it no longer bothers me, but the aliasing was kind of annoying. Hopefully the real thing would have AA though.|||Derek|||pilgrimg|||Wait does Derek think Hellgate London did something good?

a NVIDIA NFORCE 790i motherboard

a NVIDIA GeForce GTX280 videocard

Simply take a quick nZone survey and correctly answer the question to be entered into the sweepstake. GOODLUCK!

The winner will be selected during a random drawing on Wednesday, August 28 and will be contacted by email.

This Contest is open only to legal residents 18 years of age or older and residence of the United States or Canada. For a complete list of rules read the official terms and conditions and the NVIDIA Privacy Policy. You must agree to these terms before entering.

Feel free to leave any comments in this topic! Happy Hunting All!|||Will this Run Demigod?

And Demigod has a lower unit count, the arena maps are smaller compared to the uber huge FA ones, and Stardock mentioned it should run 10 times faster on averege.

I wish I could enter myself ;)|||Hmmmm.....

Now I'm intrigued, I'll have to look into it when I get home, pity if I were to win I wouldn't have it in time for the Beta.

Does GPG want Space Siege to fail?

[:1]With only a week to go before the launch, I amazed that there is no hype around this game. Very few people are talking about it, and the forums are all very quiet, especially the official ones. Why are staff not talking here, getting people excited?

The demo seems to have scared as many people away as it has brought them in. I can't comment on the demo since I can't get it working, and my post about that is being ignored.

Was it Microsoft that drove the releases of the previous Dungeon Siege titles? If so, will Sega do anything to help this game?

I was a sure sale, but since the demo won't run, and there appears to be zero support for the game, I'm going to pass for now. Perhaps I'll pick it up when it's on budget and has received a few patches.

Really disappointed in GPG |||GPG is a developer, and building "hype" is not really their job, I think they hired stardocks, the distributors, to do that.

hype is short term, think about long term.|||Sega is the publisher for Space Siege I think, not Stardock.

GPG isn't really in charge of hyping. They could be in the forums more but lots of games have devs who never speak in the forums.|||I realize that devs don't hang around the forums for all games, and they are probably working on last minute bug fixes, but not having anyone official talking about the game makes it seem like they aren't proud of it. Typically, a good game has at least a few people who are constantly talking to reviewers and hanging on their own forum to help build interest.

Sega is the publisher this time around, but to be honest, I have never really noticed sega building hype. They publish, but they don't seem good at spreading excitement around.

A demo is a promo piece, a small portion of the game to whet your appetite, and it's a very important promo piece. I have played demo's before when sure I would buy a game, only to discover it isn't the game I thought it was, and I cancel my order. On the other hand, I've played demo's for games I'm not sure about, and they have won me over. I'm not the only one who has problems running the demo, but nobody is responding.

It just seems like GPG has moved on to Demigod, well, I don't know what they are doing... perhaps they just have too many games to be published, so aren't giving full attention to any of them. I have visited the forum at the Sega website, and it's always been pretty dead. August 2007 they bragged about visiting GPG and getting interview videos, but a year later, they still haven't bothered to post anything as, I believe SeaDawg said, the game wasn't top priority.

I'm seeing August 22 as the most commonly listed release date, which I believe would be driven by the publisher. Hopefully, this means they will give it a lot of attention at PAX, August 29-31.

Really, this post is a cry for GPG to get excited about their own game and talk about it more.|||Actually, I like Gas Powered Games' method. I find that companies that hype their products invariably create a false sense, and build up to a letdown. It is much more honest to simply state facts and let the game speak for itself.|||I agree, lack of advertising = lower number of people playing the game, happened with both SupCom and FA, only found out about them through friends/forums.

Now see, the giant count down that they had for those 3 units would be perfect for game launches|||CB, you write much but not think as so.

They no talk because they not allowed to, all companies have controls over their IP. It is legal thing.|||CaptainBadger|||Derek|||Derek|||What I have read about SpaceSiege in german magazines is that it already failed big times...

Well we will see.|||Bhaal|||Those reviews make me a little more confident, though of course the full one when it is released will have more pros and cons listed.|||They need a better product to hype....|||Well, I will add my two cents. As for the initial question, Does GPG want Space Siege to fail? That is an obvious no. :)

Will it fail? I believe the amount of aftermarket support they are willing to give the game will be the ultimate deciding factor of a success or failure.

I have loved all their products since DS1. They gave excellent aftermarket support there and that helped to build a good foundation of trust from the community, and the ensuing longevity of the series.

And I believe the aftermarket support they give their new games will be the deciding factor of the success or fail of GPG as a whole. Let's hope they return to their roots and give us, the community, what we deserve from their products. 8)|||PhoeniX60|||t1essev

Space Siege, or the future is grey...

[:1]What is it with so many games that play in the future, everything has to be in two different shades of grey or something? I just stumbled across this screenshot and I think its crying for help:

Image

I took 10 minutes to improve it a little imo:

Image

What do you think, some more light and colors or rather the old style?

This isnt just a single screenshot I picked btw, I can find at least another 5 with grey walls and floor in 2 minutes. Just use the Google image search... :(

PS: There are 16,7 million colors in your image editor, why only use 256?|||colors are for kids...

black and grey is for real MEN!

(agree with you btw :P, no need to overdo the booring colors, nice amounts of everything )|||Hmm, to me there is actually no real difference between the pictures, only that once is less dark.

In other words, if a game had destructible lights and you shot some of the out, picture B would look like Picture A.

In other words, to me you're advocating that futuristic universes should have more working light bulbs :P

But seriously, the second pic is a bit glaring on the eyes.

If the devs were clever then the monsters and other objects would be somewhat brighter, making them more visible against a dull background. Whereas if everything was bright that sort of clarity would be lost.|||No offence but the "corrected" picture looks cartoony like. Space Siege is not supposed to be cartoony.|||Meh,

I think that first picture does look pretty grey, but most screens I've seen of space siege didn't seem that bad on the color front.

As for your modified version, I don't think it looks cartoony, just well lit. And with some colors besides grey it actually does look better than the original.|||It's a room full of crates. How much color can there possibly be?|||AngryZealot|||from a visual graphics standpoint, perhaps they are leaving the background bland so that the characters, enemies, and special effects stand out more.|||Its not like Space Siege is the only game suffering from the grey virus:

Image

Image

But what is wrong with some colors? Im tired of seeing the same grey panels on all walls, ceiling and floor.

You can find some good examples of how colors can be used without looking cartoonish in Stargate Atlantis:

Image

Image

Image|||Col. Jessep|||brent_w|||AngryZealot|||Gnats3|||Cement can be tinted to any colour you choose. It's architects you want to blame. They're the aesthetic designers.|||But notice in your other screen shots, that the weapons and combat effects are all very bright colors, and stand out a lot in contrast to the background.

It's also interesting to compare with MMOs like WoW, Guild Wars, AOC etc. They often have incredibly beautiful and colourful backgrounds.

Whether its unconscious instinct by the art directors, or by deliberate design, the theme here is that action packed combat gameplay will tend to highlight the weapon and combat effects, blood, monsters etc, whilst letting the background fade into... well, the background.

Whereas games that involve exploration and travel tend to have greater focus on the scenery.

--------------

Sure, when you look at screenshots, or when you're critiquing the game from a pure artistic or level design point of view, it might seem the levels are bland. But if you're actually considering the game as a package, it might work better overall with a subdued background and bright foreground if the game is rapid paced action based.|||I think we have to consider the context of the picture. It's obviously taking place in some kind of cargo hold, so why would there be lots of color? It's a completely utilitarian area. If this was a jungle, or even someone's room (living quarters), I'd have complaints.

If you go to Lowes (a US hardware store) it's all grey, with a few blue poles and support pillars. If you go to the Home Depot (another US hardware store), you get the nasty combo of orange and grey. In fact, when was the last time you went to a warehouse used purely for storage that wasn't some drab boring color?

As for your picture, the floor looks cool, but the walls look like a doctor's office.|||Insanity-O_o|||The problem is very simple. For some strange reason the majority of gamers and game designers seem to have decided that 'reality' is shades of desaturated brown and gray. Since Spaceships are clearly metal, they should be all gray.

This of course, completely ignores the fact that real life spaceships tend to be soft light colors and\or white, and that you get a significantly better effect with plastics and a few neon lights than you do with rusty gray metal.

I mean, come on guys, your in space, do you really think you can build a spaceship out of rough unfinished metal? Jesus.|||Thank you Phoenix!

I think a big part of it is that you can combine all those greyish-blue brown-greenish textures with each other without a second thought. You just make like 20 floor textures, 30 for walls and you can recombine them however you like. No surprises. They will fit somehow. It will also help the player to see enemies - like thats something I want...

But even if you stick with an all grey environment you can have more variation. Just make parts of the textures lighter (walls) than the rest. Id still prefer some colors on the textures, just turn down the saturation a little and it will work too.

I've checked all avaivable screenshots (20 official + 3 test level screens that were hidden on the server) and every single wall and floor texture is grey!

So far Id say:

lighting 3/5

effects 4.5/5

meshes 3.5/5

animation 4.5/5 (new trailer)

textures 1/5

But after playing Mass Effect for a few days now Space Sieges optic needs an overhaul. And like Angry Zealot already stated in the other thread: please rework the main character.|||Basically, the problem i have with Space Siege as it is now is it doesn't look like it's in a spaceship in the future. It looks like somone took a random warehouse on earth, boosted it into orbit and then gave everyone laser swords.

This totally ruins immersion for me, really.

Also, some intellegent environment placement would be nice, aka, quit it with the stupid random crates thrown about with no sense or reason behind them.|||The Arm Commander|||Just because it's rediculous doesn't mean it can't be immersive.|||PheonixIV|||PheonixIV|||As long as a game remains consistent with their art direction and story conventions, then immersion is usually fine.

What really hits you and breaks immersion is when game's make an unnecessary break from being consistent and bad environment design. Such as use of invisible walls and ceilings.
