The first review of Space Siege by IGN

[:1]well the first review has been posted by IGN giving it a 6.4/10, which isnt that good :( however there were a few points in the review that i found odd, like the reviewer didnt bother to explore the game that much etc. anyway, ill post the review link and my thoughts about the review (if anyones actually interested :D ).

Quote:|||It seems to be the reviewer played the game for 30 minutes and then wrote up the thing, and totally forgot they reviewed similar games before which they gave higher scores.. :D

Hmmm.. maybe one ought to start a review sites that reviews reviews?!

Seriously, I can't think of many the last few years that wrote up something that let you make a decently informed choice on wether to buy or to wait or to move on.

Naturarly, I am miffed at some things in SS, but the little demo was spiffy I thought. It will probarly be a game to enjoy casually though, not the next Dungeon Siege as they said..|||found this on the net, it provides some nice extra info about the game that i thought might be interesting to some of you :)

its a free version of the Space Siege strategy guide!

http://www.gamestop.com/gs/content/spacesiege.pdf|||Thing is. Many of the things the reviewer brought up were brought up by the players from the demo. Could of been avoided with a small delay in the release.|||By all accounts this game is totally mediocre. There's no need to omnislash his review there buddy.

Especially the bits about how "its all OK, its an ARPG". If it was an ARPG then good ARPGs also provide so much more- huge and extensive loot systems, well designed levels, clever skill trees, and multiple classes. Apparently this game has none of that. One class with 2 skill trees? Pre-determined weapons? The only loot is generic parts for upgrades?

On top of that, no not all ARPGs are all that linear and in Diablo for example because the map is randomized you have to explore each time and the exploration becomes part of the game.|||Well Dumbing down games doesn't mean you'll sell more copys, Let's hope they remember that for the next few titles.

RPG players, the people who've played dungeon siege etc like indepth systems which give the player choice, just because it's more on the action side doesn't mean it has to have such a... bare to the bones take on everything.

I mean really who's going to pick this game over mass effect? ( I know they're very different at the core but still)|||Well most reviews blow though a game in one evening; they focus on the pretty and what are known as the "must haves" per Genre

In the consumerist they had an anon reviewer of movies and games post a lengthy article. There “company” gives them “new movie/game” for an evening and then say: go to it... and for the next 6-9 hours they play their game, watch their movie, once the times up they quit finished or not. Some just re-write there review based upon others without even turning the game on (installing it)

Game reviews should be trusted once the games been out for at least a week. That give someone who likes the style of game and understands what it is a chance to play it...

SS is most like a mix of Halo and Deus Ex... this is a FPS-RPG but Diablo style. The action is the story, the environment is a ship. I know it’s not going to have a different feel every level, it’s like complaining that Rainbow Six Vegas has nothing but Vegas themed levels...

Anyways I’m snagging a copy tonight, the demo hooked me and I’m very V ERY excited to see the full version :)|||Kal_Jerico|||FieryBalrog|||Well here's the problem, an action RPG is no excuse for watered down and under developed character development and content.

I'd say the Wticher is closer to an "action" game, rather than an RPG as it's combat heavily involves around player reaction. I loved that game, and I must admit I can't wait for it's free content patch.|||Dropping the loot system from DS II is a major mistake. The DS II loot system get overwhelming because you have the different class so you got to deal with dropping weapon and armor and potions and stuff for many different class of characters.

The fact that you only have essentially one class of character makes it real simple. Having varies armor drops that offers different kind of protection is much better than upgrading you armor with varies resist. Same thing with weapons. Having more weapon types with varies strength and weakness makes for interesting play styles.

Dropping all that takes about 20% to 30% of the fun away from the game right off the start. Guess I'll wait till it hits the bargain bin.|||NoneSuch|||There's the problem then, They've designed a shallow game which lacks the majority of features which add diversity and variety to other action RPGs.

If I remember correctly Dungeon siege and Diablo pretty much were pure action games at heart, they just had alot of other stuff to go with it.

You can't make a game, then try to sell it on the fact it's missing bits from previous games years older.

It's all down to personal opinion though I suppose, I just don't see why an "action" game should be a shallow click-fest.|||So basically we've lost the classes, loot and environmental variation of Dungeon Siege and instead we get exploding barrel physics.

Quote:|||I only found out about this game a month ago. I was excited at first since GPG was behind it, but after reading more about the game and seeing Chris' interviews, I knew we were in for a bumpy ride with this game.

I said in another post, but they should have named the game something other then "siege". What is GPG known for mostly, I would say DS. DS and DS2 were one kind of game, and to make another game in the "Siege" series that has nothing similar, seems like a big mistake to me. The first thing people will think is "Space Siege, must be similar to Dungeon "SIEGE".

No, not the case. They removed pretty much everything that made DS a great game, and instead gave us a "great" story. Unfortunately, it seems that when a company says the story is a real big part of the game, it usually means the actual game is going to be sub-par.

Also, it doesn't seem like there is a lot of replay to this game. I don't know if the multiplayer is a separate "game" like in DS1. I loved the way the multiplayer map was completely different from the single player. That itself added a lot to the game.

Tis a shame in the end. I doubt this game will do well. Once it's dropped in price I could see people getting, but I have a feeling that by then most people will have pirated it :(|||Supreme_Annihilation|||The problem is very simple, the game fails as a standard RPG because it's too shallow and action orientated, but it fails as an ARPG because it lacks any sort of loot complexity or decent character customisation.

I can't hunt down different skill, class and item combinations to make my character look unique and play different from everyone else, but at the same time i can't get involved in the story and the characters.

Basically, SS falls short of expectations, that's all there is too it. It just isn't as good as it could be, and it doesn't manage to excel anywhere except at looking a bit pretty.|||Quote:|||It was a fair review. WHat did you guys honestly expect from it?

This is GPG's cash making game, They'll make some quick money out of this and focus their efforts to DemiGod. ALot of game companies do this.|||Some better environments, a proper set of random items and WASD movement (along with dodge) would make this game pretty good, and worth getting.

As it is, i think i'll skip it.|||I have to say, that this review is mostly bullshit. He docks off points on things that game game isn't trying to be for one, and other points he makes leaves me with the impression that he only played the demo.|||Posted my findings after I finished SS last night, was really disappointed, i'd have given it a 50-55ish rating myself.

http://boards2.sega.com/sega_board/view ... a4aed280c3|||I think reviewers and everyone else would go much easier on this game if it didn't sport a $50 price tag.

And I know it's not supposed to be "Dungeon Siege in space," but if that's the case, don't attach the name of a beloved franchise and be surprised when people get pissed off that it doesn't deliver.

Remember the Shadowrun remake? Yeah...

Honestly, I'm kind of amazed that GPG dropped the ball so hard on this one. You could have easily added loot on top of the upgrade system (hey wouldn't it be awesome if there was improved clothing/body armor for human characters and better parts for the cyborgs? VARIETY!), not forced people into a brainless control scheme, and peppered the game with nooks to explore and sidequests.

If you say there's no such thing as exploration in an ARPG, have you never played Dungeon Siege 2? I spent so much damn time in that game running down sidequests and stumbling upon caves and such.

I thought TQ's linearity was boring in comparison.

Memo to GPG: The loot-heavy ARPG is far from dead. Diablo 3 is going to sell a bajillion copies and Denis the Penis Dyack's Too Human is a variation of the same formula.

Hellgate would have done fine as well if it had a competent team backing it and more than five tilesets or whatever.

SS is just an insult to GPG's fanbase and asking $50 for the game is a joke. Good ARPGs are few and far between...you guys know how to make them and could have had yourself a winner here.

Next up is another RTS? Yeah, because we need more of those.|||Kal_Jerico|||The single player game is decent, I stopped playing mass effect few missions to the end because the gameplay and the story didn't live up to expectation. The ultimate victims of Hype.

I am on my second try through space siege. The dodge thing is annoying, but once you figure out that you can hold down right mouse button and move the mouse and still attack the current enemy, it doesn't become that big of a deal.

The loot thing however, is lack luster. I miss the yellow, blue, purple, green item names. If only the Single Player missions added side quests and randomized maps.

But overall between Diablo 1 and 2, Dungeon Siege 1 and 2, Space Siege, and Mass Effect. I enjoy Space Siege the most.

and I haven tried multiplayer yet.

Different stroke for different folks.
